Table 1 Differences between ALA and PLA

From: Entamoeba histolytica and amoebic liver abscess in northern Sri Lanka: a public health problem

Comparing amoebic liver abcess (ALA) and pyogenic liver abscess (PLA)

Amoebic liver abscess (ALA)

Pyogenic liver abscess (PLA)

• Mainly monomicrobial with E. histolytica

• Affects younger males in resource-limited settings [88]

• Blood samples display no left-shift in white blood cells [88,89,90]

• ALA more commonly affects males than females

• Hyperbilirubinemia [91]

• Clinical presentation pyrexia, right upper quadrant pain, hepatomegaly

• Polymicrobial with Klebsiella pneumoniae and Escherichia coli [92]

• Affects older male and female patients with history of diabetes or cholelithiasis

• Blood samples generally display elevated bilirubin with increased left-shift in white blood cells and hypoalbuminemia [88,89,90]

• PLA also occurs in non-endemic settings more commonly and has no sex bias

• Clinical presentation pyrexia, right upper quadrant pain, hepatomegaly
